ROCK FALLS, IL – According to Qctimes.com, two people suffered injuries in a crash that took place on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, on U.S. 30 in Rock Falls.
Emergency personnel arrived at the site of theaccident at about 6:23 in the morning. Police reports indicate that 65-year-old Melody Lerette of Dixon, Illinois was traveling north on County Line Road when she drove through the stop sign at the intersectionwith U.S. 30 and her vehicle was hit by a car that was traveling east. The driver of the other vehicle was identified as 57-year-old Buddy Bennett of Sterling, Illinois. The drivers were both injured in the crash.
The authorities did not release information regarding the extent of the injuries or the condition of eitherdriver, but it was reported that Lerette was transferred to a hospital in Rockford via airlift.
Police issued Lerette a citation for failing to stop at the intersection.
Many car accidents that take place annually in the United States happen at intersections. According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 50 percent of overall crashes take place at intersections. Mistakes made by drivers are responsible for about 94 percent of all crashes. While the numbers would seem to indicate that there is little that can be done to prevent drivers from making simple mistakes, it turns out that well-designedroads can actually force drivers to behave more responsibly even without those drivers making a conscious effort to changetheir behavior.
For instance, intersections are dangerous because they are confusing, and it is common for drivers to violate traffic lights and stop signs. Roundabouts make these types of crashes far less likely and therefore make the roads safer.
