LAKE COUNTY, IL- The chicago.suntimes.com reports that a man from Waukegan is now facing charges in relation to a Saturday night crash that critically injured his one-year-old child. The man was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was arguing with the driver as they were driving near Lake Bluff.
The woman driving, identified as a 22-year-old woman from Waukegan was operating a 2008 Honda and traveling south on Illinois Route 41. Reports indicate that 22-year-old Derwin Guadarrama-Jimenez was in the front seat. In the back of the vehicle,the couple’s one-year-old son and a 15-year-old boy were sitting.
In the midst of an argument with thewoman driving, at about 8:05 p.m., Guadarrama-Jimenez reportedly grabbed hold ofthe steering wheel and intentionally turned it causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a tree. Both the driver and the child were transported to theCondell Medical Center. The child was later transferred to the Lutheran General Hospital where he was reportedly in critical condition. Reports from Monday indicate the boy’s condition has now stabilized.
The 15-year-old passenger and Guadarrama-Jimenez were both taken to Lake Forest Hospital where they were treated and released. Police arrested Guadarrama-Jimenez after he was released from the hospital and he is now facing charges for “two counts of reckless conduct, one felony, andone misdemeanor.”
While the cause of this collision was an intentional action, run off the road accidents are common and often devastating. When cars hit fixed objects along the side of the road, it can be deadly. The most commonly struck roadside object is a tree.
