Teen Crashes into Beach Park Home in What Was Likely a Drunk Driving Incident

BEACH PARK, IL – Abc7chicago.com writes that a teenage girl drove into a home early on Saturday morning, December 29, 2018. The incident took place at 1 a.m. in Beach Park, Illinois.*

The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 19-year-old woman. The driver was the only person in the vehicleat the time of the crash. The vehicle struck a home that was not occupied.

The woman caused severe damage to her vehicle and to the home but was able to walk from her vehicle to a neighboring house to get help. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

The house sustained significant damage and following the crash, was found to be uninhabitable.

Police believe that the woman was under the influence of alcohol when the crash took place. Sheriff John Idleburg of Lake County used the incident to remind people never to drink and drive. Idleburg state that driving while under the influence is “not worth risking your life and the life of others.”

The crash is still being investigated.

Crashes into buildings happen many times daily across the United States. Many of these crashes are the cause of simple driver errors or pedal errors wherein a driver mistakenly strikes the gas rather than the brakes.

On average, 17 percent of crashes into commercial buildings are caused by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.

While fewer drivers get behind the wheel drunk now than in the past, drunk drivers still cause a high number of fatal crashes every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 10,497 people died in alcohol-related collisions in 2016 meaning that 28 percent of all vehicle-related fatalities were caused by alcohol-impaireddrivers.
