Single-vehiclecrashes cause around one out of every five roadway fatalities in the United States. Most of these crashes involve cars driving off the road and either rolling over or hitting a stationary object. Driver behavior is responsible for nearly all of these crashes, although curvy roads and inclement weather can also contribute to the likelihood of one of these collisions.

Drivers involved in single-vehicle crashes often were driving above the speed limit. In fact, in 90 percent of fatal accidents where one car leaves the roadway, the driver was speeding. Another risk factor is alcohol. Alcohol plays a part in a large number of fatal crashes, although drunk driving rates have been on the decline. The rate of drivers who were under the influence at the time of fatal accidents is higher for single-vehicle crashes than it is for other types of fatal accidents.

Distracted driving and drowsy driving also increase a person’s risk of being in a one-car crash.
