GALESBURG, IL- According to galesburg.com, two people from Monmouth are now in intensive care following a crash that took place on Thursday. December 13, 2018. The individuals were riding in an SUV when they were struck by a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Route 41 and Knox Road.*
The victims were identified as 31-year-old Waylon R. Clark and 32-year-old Heidi Clark. The results of the early investigation indicate that the eastbound SUV ran through the stop sign on Knox Road. The truck, driven by 35-year-old Dirk A. Steele or Maquon was driving south and collided with the SIV on the smaller vehicle’s driver’sside.
The force of the crash shoved the SUV off the road and into a ditch to the south of the intersection.
The injured occupants of the SUV were both transported to the Galesburg Cottage Hospital before they were transferred to the OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center by helicopter. Both of the victims were being treated in the ICU.
Another serious crash took place at the same location in January 2016. The earlier collision killed 40-year-old Elizabeth Dechow of Abingdon.
Intersections controlled by stop signs lead to a large number of crashes. The driveroften stopsat stop signsbut then proceed through the intersection when it is not safe to do so. It is less common for people to disregard a stop sign completely.Traffic lights are not too much better, and one study indicated that vehicles drive through red lights at a rate of about one time every 20 minutes.
Non-traditional intersections such as roundabouts might be the best solution to the high number of intersection crashes seen annually in the United States.
