BISMARK, IL- Commercial-news.com writes that a 47-year-old man was killed in a crash on Illinois Route 1 on Friday, December 14, 2018. The victim was traveling southbound at about 7:45 in the morning when he veered across the centerline of Route 1 and hit another vehicle head-on. The man was operating a Ford. A 29-year-old woman was driving the other vehicle. Her name has also not been released.*
Reports indicate that the victim’s Ford overturned and caught fire along the east of the road. The man died at the scene of the crash. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The police statethat the woman had her seatbelt on, but it is unclear whether the man was wearing his at the time of the crash.
The crash shut the road down for several hours. The investigation is still ongoing.
Illinois has a universal seatbelt law that makes it illegal for any vehicle occupants to drive without their seatbelts. Regardless of the fines that a person might be required to pay for failing to buckle up, wearing a seatbelt is just the responsible thing to do. Of the 37,461 people killed in automobile crashes in 2016, 48 percent did not use a seatbelt. Using a seatbelt while riding in the front of a passenger vehicle reduces a person’s risk of death by 45 percent.
