CHICAGO, IL- Abc7chicago.com reports that two vehicles collided on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, causing one car to flip upside down. The collision occurred on West Irving Park Road. One person was taken to the hospital withinjuries, but details regarding their condition are not knownat this time. The crash closed down Westbound Irving Park while emergency workers responded to the scene.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of thecrash.
Rollover crashes are particularly deadly. More than one-thirdof traffic deaths are the result of rollover accidents.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration,there are several factors that contributeto cars flipping over. The type of vehicle plays a significant part in how likely a car is to flip. Vehicles with higher centers of gravity are more likely to roll over. The vehiclesat the most risk as SUVs, pick-up trucks and vans. However, any vehicle can roll over in the right circumstances.
Another major contributing factor is the speed at which thevehicle is moving. Almost 75% of rollovers happen in places where the speed limit was 55 miles per hour or more. About 40% of deadly rollover accidents involved cars that were speeding. Rollovers are most likely in rural areas, probably in part because the roadways are more likely to have higher speed limits.
Alcohol is a factor on almost half of rolloveraccidents, and so is inattentive driving. The vast majority of rollover fatalities occur in single-vehicle crashes. Most are not provoked by tricky driving conditions, indicating that drivers are likely to blame in many of these collisions.
The NHTSA states that 69% of people killed in rollovers were not using their seatbelts.
