Single-vehicle crashes are sometimes partially the result of inclement weather, but in most cases, these crashes are the result of human mistakes. Drivers are more likely to be involved inthese types of crashes if they are engaged in certain risky or careless driving behaviors. In about 90 percent of one vehicle accidents in which a driver veers off the road, the driver was traveling over the speed limit. In many cases, these accidents also involve a driver who is either distracted, sleepyor under the influence of alcohol. Drivers who cause single-vehicle crashes are more likely to have been consuming alcohol than drivers who are in multiple-vehicle crashes, although alcohol is a common factor in many serious crashes.

Distracted driving is another common reason for severe car accidents. Many people do not realize just how quickly they can lose control of their vehicle when they are not paying attention to driving. In many cases, distracted driving is associated with using a smartphone.
