Kill thousands of people across the United States every year. The number of pedestrians killed increased in 2016 and 2017 to reach close to 6,000 people. Elderly individuals, identified as those who are 65 or older, account for about 19 percent of all pedestrian deaths.

These accidents are more common at night, in urban locations, and outside of crosswalks. Alcohol factors into many pedestrian incidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), about 48 percent of all pedestrian accidents involve alcohol impairment of either the driver or the pedestrian.

The speed at which vehicles are traveling plays a crucial role in how likely a person is to be killed in a pedestrian crash. Advocates for pedestrian safety have been pushing for 20-mile-a-hour speed limits in places with heavy pedestrian traffic because lowering the speed of vehicles can greatly decrease the risk of a fatal accident.
