Victim Identified in Deadly Crash on I-72 in Macon County, Illinois

MACON COUNTY, IL- The herald-review.com reports that 63-year-old Kathleen Fleckenstein of Decatur was killed in a car accident in Macon County on Thursday, May 17, 2018. The accident occurred at around 8 p.m. close to Harristown when the victim’s car collided with a tractor-trailer.  Another vehicle was also involved in the collision.

Reports indicate that first responders had difficulty extracting the victim from her vehicle. According to Michael Day, the Macon County Coroner, Fleckenstein sustained multiple injuries, including head trauma and trauma to her torso.

A 21-year-old woman from Springfield was also involved in the collision and suffered injuries. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and was later released.

The 35-year-old driver of the semi-truck was not reportedly injured.

A police statement indicates that Fleckenstein’s car hit the truck which caused the semi to travel into the eastbound lanes where the 21-year-old collided with the truck. Lanes were closed near Decatur while the crash was cleared. Investigations are still underway into the cause of the accident.

In 2015, crashes involving tractor-trailers made up 3.8% of total vehicle collisions. A total of 90 people were killed in accidents with semi-trucks in Illinois in 2015, which was about 5% fewer fatalities than in 2014. In the vast majority of accidents involving large trucks, the person or people killed were occupants of another vehicle. Out of the 90 fatalities, 7 were traveling in the trucks, 74 were traveling in other vehicles, 7 were pedestrians and 2 were cyclists.

Because large trucks are dangerous to other drivers on the road, and because they cannot stop quickly or maneuver as well as smaller vehicles, it is important for drivers to stay alert, to give trucks plenty of space, not to cut it too close when passing them, and to stay out of truck drivers’ blind spots.
