Pedestrians and cyclists tend to be the most common victims in hit-and-run accidents. This is in part because when a vehicle strikes these victims, the vehicle usually sustained only minorif any damage and the driver is able to flee from the scene. In cases where a car hits another car, the vehicles may be too damaged to leave the crash scene effectively.
Hit-and-run crashes are becoming a bigger problem in Illinois and across the United States. In recent years, the state and the country have reached new record highs for the number of fatal hit-and-run crashes that take place on the roads annually.
It is important for drivers to realize that fleeing the scene of a crash leads to significant increases in legal penalties. When a crash happens, drivers should attempt o render aid, and report the accident to the police.
