Head-on collisions are a type of accident called a lane departure crash. In addition to head-on collisions, sideswipesand run-off-the-road crashes fall into this category. All of these accidents involve a driver drifting out of their lane, and they have many of the same causes. Drivers who are drunk, drowsy, distractedor speeding often cause these accidents.
Head-on collisions are particularly dangerous because of the velocity involved when the vehicles strike one another. It is sometimes shocking how quickly and easily a driver can cause one of these devastating accidents. In many places, roadways are not divided with any form of barrier that would prevent vehicles from drifting into opposite moving lanes of traffic. It takes only a matter of seconds for a driver to drift across a center line. When this happens, driverstraveling in the correct direction often are left without an opportunity to avoid the crash.
Head on collisions can be deadly even at lower speeds. The chances of surviving one of these accidents drop significantlywhen vehicles are moving 43 miles an hour or more. One way to make the roads safer would be to have medians on roads with speed limits greater than 40 miles per hour.
