Minooka Crash Kills One
MINOOKA, IL- Morrisherald-news.com writes that a resident of Minooka died in a collision on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at about 12:15 in the afternoon. The crash involved a GMC Canyon and a Mercedes. The GMC was driving northbound on Ridge Road when it reportedly struck a white Mercedes that was exiting Interstate 80.
The driver of the GMC pickup truck was rushed to the St. Joseph Medical Center but died before reaching the hospital.
The Minooka police and the Illinois State Police are both working to determine the cause of the crash.
For the past two years, more than 1,000 people have died in car accidents in Illinois. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), 1,080 people were killed in car accidents in Illinois in 2017, indicating an increase of two people over the previous year.
One major concern is distracted driving, which is an ongoing problem but is difficult to detect, and difficult for police officers to enforce. IDOT also reports an increase in motorcycle fatalities.
Another possible factor contributing to the high number of car accident related fatalities in Illinois is the state’s decision to increase speed limits on many roadways. Statistically, speeding-related fatal car accidents match drunk driving-related fatalities. Unlike drunk driving or not wearing a seatbelt, there has not yet been a shift in thinking that leads to “negative social consequences” related to speeding. Because of the impact of speeding on car crashes, many places are working to lower speed limits as a way to increase road safety.
