Pedestrians and cyclists are often the victims of hit-and-run accidents. When vehicles strike pedestrians, the vehicle is often left with minimal or no damage making it possible for the driver to flee the scene. Many pedestrian incidents take place at night when visibility is low. In these situations, if there are no witnesses, a panicked driver may feel that they can get away without any legal repercussions. Sadly, it is also the case that the driver who strikes a pedestrian may be the best and only chance that pedestrian has of getting help.
Hit-and-run crashes have reached the highest ever recorded levels in the United States and have been referred to in some areas as an epidemic. States have tried increasing penalties to deter drivers from fleeing the scene of crashes, but too many drivers still get away without ever being apprehended and charged for the crime.
