Hit-and-run accidents are more common than many people realize. According to a study conducted by AAA, in approximately one out of every five pedestrian fatalities, the responsible driver flees the scene of the accident. In the majority of hit-and-run accidents, about 60%, the person killed is a pedestrian.

The chances of a driver fleeing the scene of an accident increase if the driver is doing something illegal at the time of the crash. For instance, drivers are more likely to leave if they are driving under the influence, or if they are driving without a license. Additionally, younger drivers are more likely to flee after being involved in a collision.

Drivers who flee the scene of an accident can face 3 years in jail, $25,000 in fines and can have their licenses suspended. States have been implementing harsher punishments for drivers who leave the scene. In many cases, the driver who caused an accident is in the best position to get the injured person or people help. Leaving the scene can prevent those injured from getting the treatment they require.
