Rear-end crashes kill about 17,000 people every year. Many more injuries are caused by these types of accidents. Most rear-end collisions are the result of a driver failing to pay attention to the road. Distracted driving is a chief cause of accidents.Distracted driving refers to behaviors as seemingly innocent as daydreaming while behind the wheel as well as actions that are known to be hazardous, such as texting while driving.

In 2016, 3,450 people died in crashes involving distracted drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statesthat on average a person reading or sending a text takes their eyes off the roadway for around 5 seconds. In a vehicle that is traveling at 55 miles per hour, a vehicle will travel about the length of a football field in theamount of time it takes to send just one text message.

Texting and driving remaina problem despite the laws that have been enacted in most states that make it illegal for people to textwhile behind the wheel. The fact that driving is such a common activity can make people become complacent, but it is important to remember that driving requires all of a person’s focus.
