PARK MANOR, IL- The chicago.suntimes.com writes that a man was killed in Park Manor in a single-vehicle collision on Sunday, December 16, 2018. A driver struck a light pole at a little before 9 in the evening. According to witnesses at the scene, a 42-year-old man was driving the vehicle on 75thStreet at a high rate of speed when heveered off the roadway and crashed into the pole.*

The driver and a 37-year-old man who was a passenger in the vehicle were both rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The 37-year-old passenger, Steven M. Harris, was declared dead at the hospital while the driver of the vehicle is reportedly in critical condition.

Harris was from the Washington Park neighborhood. He died of blunt for injuries, and his death was determined to be an accident.

The driver of the vehicle is facing citations for “disobeying a red light, failure to reduce speed, driving without insurance and driving without a license.”

The crash is being investigated by the Major Accidents unit.

Run off the road crashes in which one vehicle veers off the roadway are common and dangerous. These crashes cause about one out of every five traffic deaths. In 90 percent of run off the road style accidents, the driver of the vehicle was driving above the speed limit. Drivers involved in these crashes are also more likely to be impaired by alcohol than are drivers involved in multiple vehicle collisions. Distracted driving can also lead to these accidents as a driver who looks away from the road to check a text message can quickly veer off the street and strike an object or overturn.
