Driver of Semi-Truck Killed in Crash in Elgin, Illinois

ELGIN, IL- Patch.com writes that a man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Elgin on Wednesday morning, December 12, 2018. The victim was driving on Route 20 in a semi-truck when he veered from the roadway and close to Nesler Road and hit a light pole at about 4:58 a.m.*

The identity of the victim has not yet been released except to say that he was a 34-year-old man from Elgin. The crash shut down Route 20 and Nesler Road for around 8 hours while the investigation was carried out.

Fixed object crashes occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes something on the side of the road. The object that is struckmore frequently than any other is a tree. The second most likely fixed object to be hit by vehicles is a utility pole. These crashes are often deadly.

Most single vehicle collisions are the result of driver errors or mistakes. The majority of single-vehicle crashes involve a driver traveling above the speed limit, and many of these accidents also involve distracted driving, drowsy driving, or driving under the influence.

While altering driver behaviors could prevent most of these crashes, it only takes a momentary lapse in focus to cause a deadly single-vehicle crash, which means changing driver behavior is not necessarily the most effective way to prevent these accidents. Many of these crashes could be avoided if objects were not installed tocloseto the road. In the case of utility poles, installing them farther from the road could save lives. If an object must be close to the road, breakaways and barriers can help prevent some of these accidents as well.
