CHICAGO, IL- Abc7chicago.com writes that 2 young children were among the 6 people injured in a collision between a van and a fire truck on Monday, November 5, 2018. The crash took place on Chicago’s South Side.
The van struck the fire truck at the intersection of California Avenue and 31stStreet a little before 8:45 a.m. The driver of the van wasa 33-year-old man.
The police report indicates that the driver of the van did not yield to the fire truck at the intersection and struck the truck. There were six people in the van at the time of the crash. Two children, ages 5 and 6, were injured and takento the Stroger Hospital. A 28-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man were also taken to the Stroger Hospital. The driver and a 27-year-old woman were brought to Mount Sinai Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
All of the injured people were reportedly in stable condition. No one on the fire truck sustained any injuries.
Police cited the man driving the van for “failure to yield toan emergency vehicle, driving without insurance, not wearing a seatbelt” and because neither of the children in the vehicle wererestrained in child-restraint systems.
Emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars, are tasked with arriving quickly at the site of emergencies. These vehicles are equipped with sirens and lights, and when they drive in emergency mode, they are able to pass through traffic signals and are given the right-of-way over other road users.
One study indicated that while police vehicles in emergency mode had a greater risk of being involved in a crash, there was no increase in risk to ambulances and fire vehicles.
