PROSPECT HEIGHTS, IL- Thedailyherald.com writes that a cyclist was killed by a vehicle on Monday, December 17, 2018, in Prospect Heights. The victim was identified as an 83-year-old man from Wheeling. Police have not yet released the man’s name.*
The victim was struck by a southbound vehicle whilehe was attempting to cross Elmhurst Road at about 12:34 in the afternoon. A police officer provided the man with CPR at the scene, andthe victim was taken to the Glenbrook Hospital.
The person who struck the victim stayed on the scene.The crash is still under investigation.
According to the dailyherald.com, a cyclist dies around once a week in Chicago’s suburbs. Many of these collisions happen in places without sidewalks or roadside shoulders. Cyclist and pedestrian deaths have both increased in recent years. Part of the problem is that biking and walking are becoming more popular in these areas. Trail networks and infrastructure improvements are encouraging more people to walk and bike, but there is a simultaneous increase in cars on the road.
Distractions caused by devices such as smartphones are a large part of the problem. Drivers are frequently on their phones engaged in activities such as texting, but pedestrians are part of the issue as well. More than 11,000 people sustained injuries between the year 2000 and the year 2011 in accidents caused by people being on their phonesand distracted while walking.
Some officers speculate that drivers in the suburbs are not used to seeing so many cyclists and are not accustomed to sharing the roadways. Despite the risks to cyclists, police still encourage people to get out on bikes saying that the benefits outweigh the risks.
