Aurora Man Charged in Death of Passenger in Saturday Crash into Fire Truck

KEDZIE, Ill. — An Aurora man is under arrest after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and crashing his sports utility vehicle into a fire truck parked along the shoulder of I-57. The crash resulted in the death of a man in his 30s who was the passenger in the SUV. The collision also injured the driver of the fire truck. The fire fighter’s injuries were reportedly minor. The fatal crash happened around 3:10 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019, according to The Daily Herald. The deadly collision remains under inquiry by the Illinois State Police.

Illinois State Police issued a press release, according to The Daily Herald, indicating that a fire crew from Markham was at the scene of an accident on I-57 north, just south of Kedzie. While those firefighters were assisting crews with the previous crash, a red 2007 Chevrolet sports utility vehicle barreled into the fire truck. The fire truck was off the shoulder of the road with the emergency lights on. The fire truck was not moving at the time of the collision. 

The massive collision injured the driver of the fire truck. The firefighter received treatment at the hospital for injuries described as non-life-threatening. The passenger of the SUV received emergency treatment on the scene and was rushed to a local hospital. The doctors at that hospital pronounced the Chicago resident dead. Illinois State Police indicated that the deceased was 32-years-of-age at the time of his death. 

The driver of the 2007 Chevy SUV is a 34-year-old man from Aurora, Ill. He sustained severe injuries in the crash, and he remains in the hospital. Illinois State Police charged with the driver of the SUV with aggravated driving under the influence. There was no additional information available from the Illinois State Police. The investigation continues.
