A Second Individual Dies from Injuries Sustained in US 90 Crash in Dayton

DAYTON- Chron.com writes that a second person has died from injuries she sustained in a deadly collision on U.S. 90 on December 10, 2018. The victim, 54-year-old Joann Lucille Basco, of Dayton had pulled to the side of the highway and was rear-ended by another vehicle.*

Basco’s family stated that the victim was taken off of life support on Wednesday, December 19,2018, at a little after 7 p.m.

The victim’s daughter, Ashley Timmons, described Basco as a wonderful grandmother and said that she “couldn’t have asked for anyone better.” Timmons had not heard about the crash until four hours after it occurred. She stated that her mother was driving on a “donut type spare tire” and that she suspected that her mother mighthave experienced problems with the tire causing her to pull over.

Basco’s vehicle was struck and pushed into the left side of the of the eastbound lanes. Timmons said her four-year-old niece was in the vehicle and that none of the people in the parked vehicle were belted when they were struck. Bosco’s third cousin, 52-year-old Cynthia Elizabeth Phillips, was in the front of the vehicle. Phillips died at the scene of the crash.

Basco and the child were brought to the hospital. Bosco did not regain consciousness following the accident. Timmons said that doctors told her that her mother would die because of pressure in her brain. The child sustained a broken femur and is recovering.

The driver who caused the crash, 61-year-old Corliss D. Viator, of Liberty was looking at her phone when she struck Basco’s vehicle.

Charges have not yet been filed against Viator, but police are still carrying out the investigation. The program began in 2017, and its goal is to eliminate traffic deaths in the city by 2026.
